October 2004

I did start writing a post, but I’m just feeling too tired and blech to try to make it make sense. So in an incoherent nutshell, today was spent trying to fix a problem with my PDA, then M and I did some painting. It served to temporarily take my mind off feeling crappy, so that’s probably a good thing. I’ve now got cramp in my hands from holding the brush to do the cutting in. Tomorrow it’s sanding and painting the trim.

I went to bed as soon as we got home, and slept for about 3 hours. Fortunately M taped Iron Chef - that’s such a cool show. M’s looking after me really well - I’m not the easiest patient. He’s bringing me tablets, putting Vicks on my chest, and giving me warm scones :) Unfortunately I can’t taste anything again, so I may as well eat cardboard. But they were nice and warm, which my cold body appreciated.

I got my new PDA today - yay! M brought it home with him. I’m currently watching it sit in the charger, willing for the time to come that I can take it out and turn it on. Hurry up, dammit! Still a minimum of half an hour to go. I’m all set up for it - I’ve installed the desktop software, and have everything from my Clie imported so it’s all ready to sync up. I’m especially looking forward to trying out the piece of software I bought without having a PDA to run it on (my OS at the time wasn’t recent enough). New toys are so much fun! Then I have to go through all my downloads and decide what I want to put on there. Cool man!

We’re doing more painting tomorrow. I don’t know whether we have a ladder long enough to reach the ceiling for cutting in though. They’re so high! It is not fun having to move the ladder around every metre or so - up, down, up down. We’ve got a really cool ladder that you can fold in such a way that you can put walk boards along it, but there’s no way I’m going to be able to reach with it in that configuration. It’s a pity, because it is so handy. Oh well, I keep telling myself that all this suckiness will be worth it when we look at the end result.

I’m not going to see HMS Pinafore after all :( M got a call from the ticket place today saying that the first three performances have been cancelled, and we can either get a refund or sit in row H (think of it - row H after getting tickets for row A!) for another performance. So we’re going to get the refund. I thought we might be able to get a partial refund and also sit in row H, but it’s probably not worth the effort. Bummer.

I am so cold, I was draped over the heater until I started writing this. I’ve got goosebumps all over!

I’m home again today. My fever’s gone down, but I’ve still got an awful headache, and a sore throat. Bloody hell - I only just got over the last thing! Thanks again to everyone who left such nice comments for me in my last post - I appreciate you indulging me in my self-pity :)

As soon as M felt my forehead yesterday afternoon, he brought me home. He’s so sweet :) I went to bed when I got home, and after an hour my fever was worse. I decided to get up, because I wasn’t going to fall asleep, and it’s just so boring lying in bed, staring at the ceiling.

I think I’m hungry. You know when you’re sick, and you have a fleeting feeling of hunger, and think that you really should eat something, but can’t bring yourself to do it? I’ll have to try to find something in a sec. And a nice cup of tea. Unfortunately we don’t have any milk, but that’s ok, I don’t mind black tea. Tea is just the perfect drink when you’re not feeling well.

The keyboard I bought on eBay arrived yesterday. Even though I don’t have anything to use it with yet, I still took it out and had a bit of a play. I’m pleased with it! And yesterday I got an email from the place I ordered my PDA from, saying that it had been shipped. So if it doesn’t arrive today, hopefully I’ll have it on Monday! Now I just have to wait for the case and screen protectors and I’m all set.

Mmmm - I think that cup of tea is calling me…

After finally getting over my cold, I think I’ve got something else. Whenever I drink water, I get the chills, and whenever I have a cup of tea, I start sweating. I just had a glass of water and I’m rugged up with my scarf wrapped around my neck, and my jacket pulled as close into my body as it gets without becoming part of it. I’m aching all over and I just want to go home.

I need a hug :’(

I used to catch the bus home from tafe rather than drive, and I’d been watching the vacant shop across the road from the bus stop with great interest over the weeks, trying to guess what what was going to open there. I initially thought it might be a furniture shop, but in the end it turned out to be a bookshop, with a cafe. They seem to be all the rage here now, bookshops with cafes attached. It’s called ‘Word’, and I remember thinking that that was a pretty cool name for a bookshop.

Anyway, a friend of mine was having her birthday recently, and since I could see that the shop had little gifty-looking things, I thought I’d nick in there one night before tafe and see if they had anything good. So I walked in, and went over to a shelf which looked like it had gifts on it. There were bookmarks with Bible passages on them, and confirmation gifts etc, and I saw that I was in the religion section. So I looked for a general gift area. I walked around a bit, and found a section which had little stuffed toys, which was great, because I was looking for a little stuffed elephant. Unfortunately all the toys were attached to books, and they did have an elephant, but I didn’t think that an adult would really have much interest in the story of Noah’s Ark written for kids in a book about 5cm square. So I started to have a look around again, when I noticed that I was in what seemed to be the kids’ religion section. I thought that was weird - bookshops don’t usually have their religion section spread over two totally different parts of the shop, do they?

Next I ended up in the fiction section, still looking for a present, and I saw titles like, ‘Heavenly Inspirations’ and ‘An Act of God’, and I wondered how the hell I managed to find religion sections everywhere I went in the shop.

And then if finally dawned on me. Ohhhhhhhh, it’s THAT ‘Word’, not ‘word’ as in, books have words so what a cool name for a bookshop. Crap.

I had another peeing moment today. Dang. Where’s a stopwatch when you need one?

12 Oct 2004 10:28 pm

I ordered my PDA today! I initially ordered it from a different place, but decided against going with them, because their communication wasn’t too good, and I didn’t really feel comfortable with putting that much money in their account and trusting that I’d end up with a PDA at the end of it. This place is better for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is that it works out a bit cheaper. It’s far and away the best price I’ve seen, so I’m really happy. And with the rebate from PalmOne, it’s even better. The only problem is that it’s going to take up to 11 business days for it to get to me :( Hopefully it will only be a week or so - 2 weeks is sooo long to wait! But I’ve ordered some other stuff for it, so hopefully everything will be ready by the time it arrives.

I watched the final episode of The 4400 last night. I was a bit disappointed with the ending (sorry Jessica!) - they said what had happened to the people, but they didn’t tie up any loose ends with any of the subplots at all. Did they end up making a series out of it? If they did, I hope we get to see it here because there were just too many things that were left answered. Other than that, I thought it was really good.

I had TAFE tonight after a two-week break. Only 9 weeks to go and I’ll be halfway through my certificate. This year has gone so quickly.

I had a very unsatisfactory breakfast today. I’ve developed the bad habit of going to the deli next door to work and getting myself a cake in the morning. I was going to buy some cereal from the supermarket nearby, but thought I’d have one more cake (to savour the sweet memories), and then get some cereal at lunch time. So I went to the deli, hoping to get a Balfours chocolate donut (Balfours because Vilis aren’t nearly as good).

I went in, but was told that the Balfours people hadn’t delivered the cakes for the day because they had a major machinery breakdown that caused delays in their distribution. The woman there thought they’d be there within half an hour or so. So I went back in half an hour, and still nothing. So I left again, and went back half an hour later. They still hadn’t been! This continued another two times, and on the second time I went back, the lady there said that after all that, they didn’t deliver any donuts - only custard tarts. Well, I’m quite partial to custard tarts, so I got one of those. They gave it to me for free, because I’d come back so many times, so that was nice of them.

I brought back my breakfast, and took it out of the container. It was pretty floppy, and a bit moist, but I took a bite. The custard was ok, but the pastry hadn’t been cooked :( I debated whether to take it back, seeing as I’d got it for free anyway, but I thought I would let them know, so they didn’t sell other dodgy custard tarts to other people. So I took it back and told them about the pastry, and they checked the other tarts - they weren’t cooked either.

The woman there’s really lovely, though, she gave me a chocolate bar to replace the cake. Unfortunately it wasn’t Cadbury, it’s that weird new Nestle chocolate ‘made with Ecuadorian cocoa’. I don’t like it that much, but I was so starving that I didn’t care. I felt a bit ill after that because I ate weird-tasting chocolate for breakfast.

Never mind, I had lunch with a good friend, and that more than made up for it.

I ran out of conditioner a few days ago. I really hate it when that happens. Unfortunately I don’t have gorgeous shampoo-commercial hair which always behaves the way it should, and I was stuck using crappy Pert until we bought some more conditioner yesterday. My hair hates that stuff. The first day it’s ok, but after a couple of days, my hair dries really greasy-looking. Blech. So it was heavenly to have my shower this morning and use my Pantene, which seems to be the only shampoo and conditioner my hair likes. It sounds sad, but I really could feel the difference when I was combing it after I finished my shower.

I watched the first part of The 4400 last night. I’m looking forward to seeing the conclusion tonight. For those of you who might not know, it’s about 4400 people who have gone missing at various times over a span of around 60 years, but who all reappear at the same time. None of them have aged in their absence, and the investigators have to work out what happened to them while they were gone. I hope it’s not a disappointing ending, because I think they set it up quite well.

Yesterday was another productive day at M’s house. I finished off the bits of the kitchen that I didn’t get to do the day before, and then I cleaned the bathroom. That wasn’t so bad, because it’s not a huge room, and there aren’t nearly as many surfaces to clean as in the kitchen. I then cleaned the stove, which is a project unto itself. I did the best I could, but in the end 2 afternoons of continuous cleaning took their toll and I just couldn’t bear to do any more. I think it looks a lot better though. So my legs are still killing me today, because I had to crouch a lot to clean yesterday. My arms are feeling fine today though.

While I was cleaning, M finished washing down the walls, and then put the undercoat on. I think we made some great progress this weekend. Much better than dragging out like we have done before - just get it all over and done with, then we can sit back and admire our handiwork. We’re going to go there tonight and put the top coat on the walls. I can’t wait to see what it looks like! Although I do have a bit of an idea, because M tinted the undercoat with some of the top coat paint (a good tip if you’re painting!), so the walls are almost the colour they’ll be when we’re done. Then it’s a matter of painting the trim (which won’t be fun), and that’s it. I’ve been taking some pictures with my phone so we can compare the before and after, so hopefully they’ll turn out ok.

I won the item! I’m going to be totally rooted for work tomorrow (or, rather, later today) because I stayed up until 1am to see the end of the auction, but that doesn’t matter, because I got it! Sometimes I think that eBay is both a blessing and a curse.
