OK, so painting is fun and everything - you get instant results after all - but I am sooo over it now. I think I just have a quota where I enjoy it, and then once the quota has been filled, I want to stop STRAIGHT AWAY. I think one more go with the paintbrush, and that will be it. And I mean it. There were some bits of trim that were really pissing me off, because the paint was soaking in instead of sitting on the surface (we didn’t bother priming that bit since it was a last minute decision to paint it), but hopefully the next coat will be all it needs. I’ll have to start taking some ‘after’ photos so I can compare them with the ‘before’ ones.
Now we just have to hire a skip so we can dump all the crap we’ve been cleaning out. M pulled down two ancient greenhouses, so there’s a lot of junk lying around. I pulled out a couple of poles, which was hard work for my bony girl arms. You know when you’re trying with all your strength to move something, but it’s not moving an inch and your arms feel like jelly? I was like that with the second pole until I wiggled it around in the ground a bit. I was determined to get that sucker out! So now I’ve got jumbo quadriceps from crouching all day, and jumbo biceps from pulling out poles. Why waste money on a gym membership?
All this housey stuff leaves me feeling pretty gypped out of my weekends. We’ve decided to go to a really nice restaurant to celebrate once we’ve finished cleaning out the house. We’ve set the day for Saturday week, so just under a couple of weeks away. I’m looking forward to it - it’s been a while since we went to a fancy restaurant.
And writing the word ‘restaurant’ made me think of this: the word for a person who runs a restaurant is ‘restaurateur’, NOT ‘restauranteur’! Grrr. I saw it on tv recently and it annoys me every time. And just one more gripe - a reporter on the news the other day said ‘nothink’ instead of ‘nothing’ - pardon?? Who are they getting to read the news these days? *shakes head in wonder*

Hi there,
Just had to comment on your latest blog post. We just finished painting every bit of the house that we are presently living in and my husband decides it’s time to start again, but this time in a new house. We will be doing this all over again this time next year, when the house is completed. Not looking forward to that at all. The extra room yes, the extra work… no!
I’ve been enjoying your blog by the way. I have recently discovered them and probably spend more time than I should looking over people’s shoulders. On the other hand, I was working too hard anyway.

We’re still painting. At least it beats sand papering. That blows goats, as you told me
Wish the whole thing was over though. I’d love to go to a fancy restaurant too.

I think you deserve to go to a fancy restaurant. It has been all work and no play for you !

I’m too lazy for DIY:(

Well, this will make you feel better. According to dictionary.com, both restaurateur and restauraNteur are both correct!

Hi Shirley! I feel for you - at least you’re experienced enough now that you have some sort of system so it doesn’t take so long
It does indeed blow goats, JaG! Why not suggest the restaurant to JaB - once you’re finished, you’ll both be too tired to cook dinner the first night, so you may as well go out
Thanks, Dawn!
At least you have your weekends to yourself, JR!
Well, Dawn, either the people at dictionary.com don’t know the correct version of the word, or people have been using it incorrectly for so long that the dictionary people finally gave in and included it. Either way, I’ll never accept it as a valid word

I guess thats another couple for the ‘Things that Piss me off’ list

Heh, I guess so
Although I’d easily fill the whole 100 things if I wrote down every word and expression that I’ve heard mispronounced or misspelled.

Hello!!
Well its not a word I really use but I probably would have been one of those people to use it incorrectly.
And well done on the painting….we haven’t had the ‘joy’ of that yet.

Hi!
I don’t use that word much, either, but it annoys me when people sneak an ‘n’ in there.

I hate it when people misspronounce. I don’t mind misspelling, though which is weird. My mom says WaRshington insted of Washington, I find that irritating.

Can’t i just akse you a question? who died and made you kings of all word and stuff? It’s not like they are nucular scientists or nuffin’!.

Jessica: I don’t mind genuine typos, but when it’s obvious that people don’t know how to spell something, I get a bit miffed
But still, I guess it doesn’t really matter!

Isn’t that odd? I was just thinking today how much it annoys me when people say “realuhtor” instead of “real-tor” That extra syllable drives me nuts. And then there’s the ever-present “nuculer”.

Going to a restaurant to celebrate it is a great idea as you both deserve it after so much work in this house!

I’ve never heard people say it that way, Virginia, but I can understand your frustration!
I’m really looking forward to the restaurant, Mo, it’s going to be nice to go somewhere fancy. It makes all the work worth it
