I have seen mention of NaNoWriMo on a few people’s blogs recently. I entertained the notion of participating for, oh, around a minute or so. While I think the idea is great, I don’t think I’m cut out for it. I hate writing essays, which is one of the reasons I decided to study the sciences at university. Writing my 1000-word essay (which I know isn’t very long) for Auslan was bad enough, but the thought of writing the equivalent of 50 of those things in a month doesn’t really fill me with enthusiasm. Maybe I could ‘audit’ NaNoWriMo - you know, not actually sign up for it, but participate all the same, so if I fail then I won’t go in the hall of fame for people who tried and sucked.
But to all of you who enjoy writing, and can think of something that you can write 50,000 words about, why not give it a go?

*ooh ooh* me first.
I would like to give it a go (not that I have any idea what I would write about), but the month it’s on clashes badly with Uni stuff. I wish it was in the middle of summer.

I participated last year but it falls in the busiest season of the job I had at the time so I didn’t do well, I am gonna give it a go again this year though.

It sounds like a great idea but I doubt I have the ability to write that much in just one month. Plus, my story would probably suck so i will not try!

i read about that….i couldn’t put myself together for something like that, but kudos to those who can!!!

Yeah, it’s a pain isn’t it Sam.
Good luck, Jessica - let me know how you do!
Neither do I, QM - I don’t think I’m a novellist - I can’t come up with interesting characters.
I agree, MM - I wouldn’t be able to do it, but I admire those who can.

I guess the idea is to force people to commit to writing. Many aspiring writers dream of writing a book yet cannot finish up one due to lack of commitment. Nano’s purpose is to encourage these people.

And yet you blog. What’s the difference? Focused versus unfocused writing?

I suppose so, Harriene. Or to encourage people who didn’t think they could write, to give it a try.
Writing the occasional blog entry is a far cry from writing a 50,000-word novel, Gary

Thats why I took up computer science in uni….so that I would NOT have to write essays…..or so I thought…..unfortunately some of the core subjects require you to write 3000-5000 word essays……and since writing 3000 words on a subject I like is hard enough…I don’t think I will be able to write 50,000……..not happily anyway

Sam, yeah, the November thing is a curse. Study was my excuse for not finishing last year - only got to 6,000 words - this year I have no excuse. There was an Australian-specific NaNoWriMo in July, I think, but it didn’t have the same community feel about it…

Jenny, a quick look at your archives suggests your ‘ocassional blog posts’ add up to about 20,000 words a month.
Not too far a cry, methinks? Give it a go! :p

I think you’d be great at it, Dawn - why not give it a go!
Thanks, Kissy! Here’s one for you too - *muah*!
I can relate, Dawn
I hope you had a good week too!
Fortunately I didn’t really have to write any essays at uni, Kunaal - thank goodness!
Really, Kent? 20,000 words? That’s still less than half the requirement though… good luck for your novel!
