Sorry to break it to you, Rich, but it is actually ‘aitch’ There were two people today who were spelling something over and over, and unfortunately the word had an h in it… it really started to grate!
Hey, doesn’t bother me in the slightest. If i’m wrong about something i would rather be corrected. I can then learn and speak proper like what others does!
hey, my first time at this site and i just had to comment on this post, everone here in australia pronounces it(’h') as ‘haitch’ and coming from India i have always pronounced it ‘aitch’. This has always bothered me, so its nice to know that someone else shares my irritation.
Rich:
You’re not alone, Kunaal, I think lots of people who are brought up to say ‘aitch’ are irritated when they hear someone say ‘haitch’
I’m not sure, JR - it looks ok for me, and I use a couple of different browsers, so I’m not sure what to fix if there’s something wrong!
Everybody I have asked to pronounce ‘H’ have said haitch. Maybe it’s a regional thing. Makes sense though, as you say “Harry” not “Arry”. (unless you’re Frank Bruno!
Of course you pronounce the ‘h’ if it’s in a word beginning with ‘h’, but the letter itself is pronounced ‘aitch’ - check the dictionary if you don’t believe me!
